Successful tyre management relies upon a flow of data from the tyre shop floor. For an operation with numerous heavy vehicles (mining) there will be an accompanying number of road trucks and light vehicles. Keeping track of this data is a large undertaking, understanding the information generated is what makes the difference in a successful tyre manager.

Using the data generated from pressure checks and tyre change events schedules such as preventative maintenance, wheel and rim inspections, tyre rotations, pressure loss inspections can be installed.

The data can be used to actually reduce downtime and unscheduled breakdowns as well as increasing safety for crews working around the equipment. For instance; a tyre has been pressure checked by 3 different shift crews over the last 3 weeks, all have recorded a pressure loss on the same rear tyre position. If these events are remain unknown by management there is a good probability that there will be an instantaneous failure in either the tyre or the wheel / rim base. Good management would have been aware of the events within the 2nd week and scheduled the unit for a tyre removal and inspection during that 2nd week. An instantaneous failure of this nature has the potential to inflict severe if not fatal injuries as well as very high property costs, not to mention the mine shutdown costs in the case of injury or fatality.

Data records can also be used to assist in budgeting for replacement stock or for an increase in the fleet size. Bu utilizing the knowledge about past consumption future stock levels can be determined. This information can be used when making economic decisions as well as supply agreements.

Data must also be verified as it is entered into the system. The first law of computing has caused many a difficult situation, garbage in = garbage out. Are your economic decisions based upon fact or fiction?
